Preceptorship as a construction agent: a narrative review on the importance of preceptorship in the health professional training context

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The multidisciplinary residency has become an important tool in the training of health professionals to build their knowledge and skills. With this, the preceptor played a fundamental role in conducting this construction. Objectives: Identify the preceptor's duties and the importance of their conduct in the learning process among the different professionals of the multidisciplinary team. Method: narrative review with a descriptive approach. The search was carried out in Virtual Health Library (VHL), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Online Medical Literature Search and Analysis System (MEDLINE) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciElo) databases. Results: 51 articles were identified between 2018 and 2023 and 17 articles were selected and read and after analysis, the studies basically converge on 2 aspects: the importance of preceptorship in professional development and the effectiveness of clinical supervision. Conclusion: The multidisciplinary residency and supervision is an extremely important and essential tool for the development of health professionals. It is observed that clinical supervision is a pillar in academic training. A well-led student in the residency and improvement phase develops their skills more completely, just as a well-trained, well-educated, and present preceptor is able to provide support for development. The residents' views were addressed and positively highlighted the importance of preceptorship in day-to-day teaching practice.
