Effects of a welcoming program on the mental health of health professionals during the covid-19 pandemic confrontation: an experience report

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The new coronavirus (covid-19) presents itself as one of the greatest health challenges on a world scale unprecedented in this century. Health professionals bear the responsibility for the care of the infected population, so they may experience high levels of stress, contributing to the development of problems related to mental health. In view of this situation, the Physiotherapy Division of the Central Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (IC-HCFMUSP), in partnership with the Clinical Directorate of this institution, developed a Reception Program for Health Professionals during the Confrontation of Pandemic of covid-19 (PAPSEP covid-19), to minimize the negative impacts on mental health and rescue the quality of life of these professionals. Objective: To verify the effects of a reception program on the mental health of health professionals during the coping with the pandemic of covid-19. Methodology: This is an experience report using a quantitative approach of a descriptive nature. The instrument used to assess the employees' mental health consisted of general data and the scale of depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), insomnia (IGI) and anguish (IES-R), reproduced through the Google Forms platform. All employees were invited to respond to the assessment in two moments, assessment 1, before, and assessment 2, after, application of the program. Results: PAPSEP covid-19 reached 20% of the employees registered in the Physiotherapy Division IC-HCFMUSP. Comparing assessments 1 and 2, the participating employees showed improvement in the symptoms of depression, anxiety, distress, insomnia, while in the group that did not participate in the program, the symptoms remained the same in the two assessments. Discussion: The positive effect of the meetings held in this study, may indicate that these participants started to develop resilience, which is related to the active coping of a stressful event, developing behavioral and cognitive strategies to face the situations imposed by the pandemic. Final considerations: The implementation of a welcoming program for health professionals, proposed by the Physiotherapy Division of IC-HCFMUSP and the institute's Clinical Board, proved to be beneficial in the mental health of the participating employees during the coping with the pandemic of covid-19.
